  이 관용구는 1769년과 그 이후 기록으로 등장한다. 이 관용구의 어원을 추적하기 위해서는 18세기 'snug'과 'bug'이 각각 무슨 뜻이었는지를 알 필요가 있다.
  
  'Snug'은 처음에 'neat; trim; well prepared(단정한, 잘 다음어진, 잘 준비된)'의 뜻으로 특히 선박들과 관련하여 사용되었다. 1595년경 Captain Wyatt의 경험담 The Voyage of Robert Dudley에 이런 의미로 다음과 같이 사용되었다.

  1630년 John Lane의 The Continuation of Chaucer's Squire's Tale에서는 'snug'의 다른 의미 혹은 그 이전 의미의 단순한 수정 형태로 오늘날 사용하는 뜻인 ‘안락한’이란 뜻을 가진 의미로 다음과 같이 사용되기도 했다.

  ‘bug’의 기원을 추적하다 보면 어원끼리 만나게 되지만 그 누구도 왜 벌레를 ‘bug’라고 불렀는지 확실하게 알지 못해 그렇게 생산적이지는 않다. 벌레를 의미하기 이전 ’bug’는 유령(ghost)나 시체를 먹는 악귀(ghoul)였다. 1535년 The Coverdale Bible의 시편(Psalms) 91:5는 그런 의미로 쓰인 'bugges'가 다음과 같이 등장한다.
  
  So yt thou shalt not nede to be afrayed for eny bugges by night, ner for arowe that flyeth by daye.
  
  'bug'가 어떻게 딱정벌레나 유충을 의미하게 되었는지는 명확하지 않지만 Daniel Rogers가 Naaman the Syrian에서 다음과 같이 사용한 1642년 이후부터 이 의미로 사용된 것은 안다.

  확장된 버전인 'as snug as a bug in a rug'이 'been there done that, got the tee shirt(이미 가 봐서 다 알고 티셔츠도 이미 샀다)’와 같은 방식으로 발생한 것이라고 생각할 수도 있다. 하지만 그 긴 버전의 관용구가 오리지널이다. 이 관용구의 사례로 가장 먼저 알려진 것은 1769년 David Garrick이 셰익스피어를 기념하여 남긴 Garrick's vagary, or, England run mad; with particulars of the Stratford Jubilee에서로 다음과 같다.

  ‘rug’이 개입되었으니 이것의 기원에 대해서도 살펴볼 가치가 있다. ‘rug’는 'rag'과 같은 기원의 Tudor왕조에서 사용된 단어로 지금 우리가 담요라고 부르는 원래 두꺼운 모직 덮개인데 Henry 8세는 그 위를 걷지는 않았다. 그것들은 19세기가 되어서야 마루에 깔리기 시작했기 때문이다. 그런 종류의 최초는 노변깔개(hearth-rugs)로 1803년 Londinium redivivum; or An antient history and modern description of London에 다음과 같이 등장한다.

  rag와 rug 매우 가까운 사이로 rug는 rag로 만들어진다. 그렇게 오래 전이 아닌 때 노변깔개는 올이 굵은 삼베에서 rag 실을 뽑아 만들었다. 이러한 rag rug 혹은 peg rugs라고도 불린 이런 것들은 여전히 영국에서 쉽게 발견할 수 있다,
  
  'as X as Y'과 같은 형태는 영어 전반에 사용되고 많은 사례들이 존재한다.
  The format 'as X as Y' runs though the English language and there are many examples. The 'X' in question invariably refers to a property that 'Y' typically possesses. It's hard to imagine a place more congenial for a bug to snuggle down than a warm hearth-rug. The first such 'bug in a rug' was probably a cricket; these creatures are attracted to warmth and congregate in buildings around ovens and open fires.
