영혼은 자신이 품고 있는 것 이외에는 다른 어떠한 것도 보려하지 않는다. 또한 영혼은 스스로의 내부에서 일어나는 것 이외의 어떠한 것도 믿지 않는다. 만약 영혼이 무언가를 경험한다면, 그 결실 또한 영혼의 일부가 된다.

인간은 저 높은 곳을 향하여 앞으로 나아갈 때만 행복하다. 일단 목적을 달성하면, 그이 열정은 식고 이내 더 높은 곳으로의 비상을 갈망한다.

자유없는 삶은 영혼이 살지 않는 육신과 같다. 사상없는 자유는 혼돈된 의식과 같다. 삶과 자유와 사상은 삼위일체이며, 영원히 사라지지 않는다.

 

인간은 위대해지지 않고서도

자유로울 수 있습니다.

그러나 

자유롭지 못하면서

결코 위대해질 수는 없습니다.

지혜는 말에 있는 것이 아니다. 지혜는 그 말이 품고 있는 깊은 뜻이다.

때로 그대가 말씀을 꺼내시기도 전,

아름다움이란 그대의 영혼을 사로잡는 것, 베풀기만 할 뿐, 받으려 하지 않는 것이다. 그대가 아룸다움에 접할 때, 그대 내면 깊숙한 곳에 있는 보이지 않는 손이 뻗어올라와 그 아름다움을 그대 영혼의 테두리 속에 잡아두려는 것을 느끼리라. 아름다움이란 슬픔과 기쁨이 어우러진 경이(驚異), 그대가 보고 있는 볼 수 없는 것, 그대가 이해하고 있는 모호함, 그대 귀에 들리는 침묵. 아름다움이란 가장 신성한 것, 그대의 마음속 깊은 곳에서 시작되어 지상의 상상을 초월하는 세계 속에서 끝을 맺는 것이다.

태초부터 인간은 자신의 이미지에 적절한 이름을 붙여가며 숭배해 왔다. 오늘날 우리는 그 존재를 "신"이라 부르고 있다.

 

모든 이에게 있어

神에 대한 생각은

서로 같지 아니합니다.

아무도 他人에게

자신의 종교를 강요할 수 없습니다.

누군가가 나타나기를 갈망합니다.

우리가,

타인에게

그리하여줄 수 있을 때,

뒷걸음질 쳐서는 아니됩니다.

그저 귓전으로 흘려들어서는

하나의 영혼이 존재하는 이유는 그 영혼의 내부에 감추어져 있다.

어떠한 그림도 그 본질은 겉으로 드러나지 않는 것과 같다.

 

때로 

우리의 영혼이 알고 있는 것을

우리들 스스로는 알지 못합니다.

우리는 스스로 생각하고 있는 것보다

무한히 더

위대한 

존재들입니다.

사랑은 온순함의 탈을 쓰고 우리들 곁을 스쳐간다. 그러면 우리는 두려움에 떨며 어둠 속으로 숨어버린다. 그렇지 아니하면, 사랑을 쫓아 사랑의 이름으로 끝내 죄를 저지르고 만다.

결혼이란 두개의 神性의 결합이다. 이 결합은 제 3의 신성이 태어날 수 있는 가능성을 내포하고 있다. 결혼은 굳은 사랑으로 뭉쳐 결코 떼어낼 수 없는 영혼의 결합이다. 두개의 영혼을 하나로 만들어 주는 것은 바로 이 결혼이라는 결합이다. 

단한번 눈길에 시작되어 영원으로 이어지는 황금의 목걸이이다. 

결혼은 티없는 하늘에서 내려와 신성한 대지를 적시는 투명한 빗물이다.

 

 

결혼이란 

나에게 상대방에 대한

권리를 주는 것이 아닙니다.

그가 직접 내게 준

권리 이외에는.

마찬가지로

그가 내게 허락한

자유 이상의

자유를 주는 것도 아닙니다.

그대의 마음을 주되, 서로에게 구속되지는 말라. 그대의 마음을 품을 수 있는 것은 오직 삶의 넉넉한 어깨 뿐. 

사랑하는 이에게 너무 가까이 다가서지도 말라. 

사원의 돌기둥이 서로 떨어져 있듯이, 참나무와 삼나무가 서로의 그늘 속에서는 자라나지 않듯이.

 

지성적인 이들에게

가장 확고한 결혼의 기반은 

우정 입니다.

-진정한 관심사를 나누어 가지는 것 -

서로 다른 생각에 대해서는 

논쟁하면서도,

서로의 사상과 이상을

이해해 줄 수 있는

힘.

당신은 아십니까?

폭풍우 속에 그토록

나를 감동시키는 그 무엇이 있는가를.

폭풍우가 휩쓸고 지날 때

어찌하여, 나는

더욱 강해지고

삶에 대한 확신이

더욱 커지는 것입니까?

나는 그 이유를 알지 못합니다.

그러나

나는 폭풍우를 사랑합니다

자연 속의 

그 어떤 물상보다도

몇 배나 더 사랑합니다.

사랑하는 친구여, 시는 신성한 미소의 화신, 그대 눈에 고인 눈물을 말려주는 한숨, 그대 마음 속에 사는 영혼이다. 시는 그대의 마음을 먹고 그대가 품은 사랑을 마시며 그대 가슴 속에서 자라난다. 그렇지 아니한 것은 거짓 구원일 뿐이다.

지상의 모든 아름다운 것들과 위대한 것들은 인간이 품고 있는 한가지 생각과 느낌에서 태어난다.

오늘날 우리 눈에 보이는 모든 것들도 이 세상에 나타나기 전에는 그저 한 남자의 생각, 혹은 한 여자의 충동이었을 뿐이다.

"그의 문체는 좋아하지만

그의 사상은 좋아하지 않아"

라고 우리가 말할 때,

우리는 무심코 

자기 모순에 빠지고 맙니다.

문체와 사상은

하나인 것입니다.

예술은 예술가의 상상과 보는 이의 상상 사이의 직접적인 의사 소통이어야 한다.

그런 까닭에 나는 가능하면 보는 이의 시각을 어지럽히는 세부적인 기교를 피한다. 또한 형상화된 예술은 아름다워야 한다. 그렇지 아니하면 그것은 예술의 근원적인 목적을 거스르는 것이다.

거울에 비추어지기 위해

만들어진 물건과 같습니다.

그 거울은

우리네 동료 인간입니다.

아직 나는 나의 마음과 영혼을 가득 채우고 있는 것에 대해 큰 소리로 이야기 할 수 없다. 단지 나는 스스로를 씨뿌려진 한겨울의 들판과 같이 느끼며, 봄이 오리라는 것을 예감할 뿐이다. 부름을 받으면 내 마음의 샘물은 넘쳐 흐르고, 내 안에 잠든 삶은 수면까지 떠오를 것이다.

 

더 의미 있지 않은가.

그 소망을 키워나아가

병약했던 어린 날, 어머니께서 내 곁에

가까이 오셨던 것처럼.

― 당신께도 분명 그런 어머님이

이슬 甘露 처럼 달콤한

생명으로 오시던 어머니.

 

어머니께서 저를 사랑하시고

제 생각 떠나실 날 없으심을

아는 까닭에

저는 아무 두려움 없었습니다.

그리하면 항상

평화가 저의 근심 위로

찾아듭니다.

그분의 존재로부터

제가 목말라 하던 것보다 ( 저는 저의 갈증이 갈망하던 것보다 )

더욱 시원한 물을 받아 마십니다.

어머니께서 머무르시는 동안

고뇌어린 기억들은

어느새 벅찬 환희,

그분의 존재를 더 깊이 느끼는

환희로 향하는

우리들의 키자람도 결국

우주의 눈부신 진보의

금빛 수술을 온통 드러내 보여 주는

닫힌 마음들이 너무나 많습니다.

 

내가 당신에게 다가갔을 때

우리는 몇 시간이나 이야기를 나누었습니다.

그대의 시간을 그토록 오래 차지하기 위해

무엇보다도 나는 당신을 향해 열려 있어야 합니다.

 

그리고 그대에게

드리는 것이 거짓 없는

'나 자신'이 아니면 결코 안됩니다.

어떠한 인간 관계도

他人에 대한 소유를 인정하지는 않습니다.

어떠한 두 개의 영혼도

절대적으로 다른 까닭입니다.

사랑이나 우정을 통해서

두 사람은 단지 나란히 서서

혼자서는 도달하기 어려운 곳을 찾아내려

이마에 손을 대고 한 방향을 바라보는 것입니다.
